CANADA Education System
In compliance with the nation’s governing principles, education in all the provinces in Canada is free up to secondary school (10+2).there are universities, community colleges and institutions at higher secondary school level. University graduates pursue professional courses and vocational skills to gain employment.
INSTITUTIONS :
There are government universities and private institutes offering various educational programs in Canada and the degrees and diplomas are recognized all over the world. With myriad choices and diverse fields from 92 universities and 175 community colleges, Canada offers a wide range of subjects. The students are provided to work on-campus for the first six months and can venture out after that.
There are four types of educational institutions offering post secondary/higher secondary education.
TECHNICAL / CAREER COLLEGES
Tthe private institutions offer kind of internship to gain hands-on experience and practical skills in the related education program.
COMMUNITY COLLEGES & TECHNICAL INSTITUTES
These colleges have more of field studies, project work, and practical/technical course program to offer expertise in the given subject. Discussions, debates, interactive sessions are held to widen the knowledge base.
UNIVERSITY COLLEGES
Complying with the education standards, most of the Canadian universities offer academic oriented university degree programs and the institutes offer practical-oriented college diplomas and certificates.
UNIVERSITIES
Canada’s universities are predominantly public funded, hence lower tuition fees for international students unlike other counterparts in competing countries. The universities offer an array of programs from diverse subjects from undergraduate level to Doctorate and from certificate level to professional degrees. They have spacious classrooms with the best amenities.
INTAKE/ ADMISSION
Aspiring students have to plan their study well in advance before the onset of the year’s first admission which begins around Fall (September). There are other intakes during winter (January) and very few during the month of May. All the courses and programs may not be available all through the year, so it is advised to plan at least a year in advance.
GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA)
A student’s grade achieved during an educational program is calculated by various parameters and scales (It may be a 4-point or 9 point scale) depending on the institutions.
CO-OPERATIVE WORK TERM
As part of the course curriculum, Canadian universities provide co-op work programs to enable students to gain practical and hands-on job experience in the relevant field. It is a full time opportunity lasting from 12-17 weeks. A combination of subjects with relevant work and theoretical study turbo jets the career path. The International students get exposure to the Canadian Job market and companies, which develops their network base for future prospects.
WORK DURING STUDIES/PART TIME WORK
20 hours of work per week is allowed for international students for the first six months. Later they can work 20 hours per week elsewhere of their own choice. On an average, a student can earn anywhere between C$ 6-10 per hour on campus work and C$ 400-1000 per month off campus.
